Episode 2 (released Jan 26) is about payday lending, and I suggest you all watch it.
It's about Scott Tucker a wealthy racecar driver who owned a payday lending business with over $3.5bn in loans to 4.5m people. The illegal loans he wrote via an association with native indian tribes who had sovereign immunity from state courts.
Episode 3 is about a pharma short (feat. our very own john hempton!). One of the famed short-sellers in this episode is Fahmi Quadir and in a bloomberg interview she did, she talked about how she is looking at payday lending as a sector to short. Fast forward to 5mins 2sec and she discusses consumer lending and payday lenders finding loopholes.
I believe the south african lender fahmi is referring to is likely to be Capitec Bank, with links to Steinhoff which was a collapsed fraud.
I reckon 'Checkmate' may have been watching a few too many netflix episodes for inspiration before targeting CCP.
