watso looks at the news, and has notice that the price of a bushell of wheat seems to be going higher. but what is a bushell of wheat. lucky watso is long in the tooth, and can recall some of the imperial weights and measures, and al least he can recall that there was something called a "bushell" ok, before watso checks it out, let watso try and recall what a bushell actually is
16oz = 1lb
14 lb = 1 stone
20 stone = 1 bushell (or was it 20 bushells = 1 ton)
maybe it was 112 lb ( a number in the far depths of watso's brain) = 1 bushell mmm - that is at least a nice even 8 stone , not that watso can recall that 8 stone meant anything
so watso's guess is that 1 bushell is 112 lb, and that 20 bushells = 1 ton ie 20 x 112lb = 2240lb mmm - that number looks pretty good so watso will not bother to check if he is correct
a long time ago, watso could only think in terms of stone and lb, and kg's were meaningless - but now (after jumping on and off the scales a few thousand times), watso understands kg better than oz and lbs
the bottom line - if a bushell is 112 lb (pound) then that is about 50kg
introducing the metric system, sure contributed to the dumbing down of the educations system, as it made calculatins far too easy. can anybody imagine doing the following mathmatical question
" one bushell,one pound, and 4 oz of wheat cost one pound 5 shillings and 6 pence. how much does one oz cost?????"
