That is a voluntary participation, and in almost all cases the participants are assured that it is "safe", except in the case of terminal cases where some may volunteer to use experimental drugs.
In the cases of experiments on animals, it is usually the case of it is not safe to experiment on humans and so us humans (who supposedly are more intelligent than animals) use animals for their tests. dave, we have never asked animals if they would like to volunteer ;-) And, if the experiment is causing extreme pain, the animal cannot ask you to stop.
