    Hi SDuncan

Short selling via the ASX is a bit different to CFDs - CFDs are a zero sum game from the operators perspective, whereas with shorting you are selling stocks that you don't own and that you will have to buy (cover) at some point.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contract_for_difference for a rundown on CFDs.

Only certain stocks are available for shorting, and the ASX keeps track of the amount of shorts available, and the percentage outstanding.

    See http://www.asx.com.au/data/shortsell.txt

I'd be a bit worried if I was a Wesfarmer holder for example, as there is 3% of the shortable stock out...

On the oposite view, CDU holders are looking bullish at the moment with only a couple of hundred thousand shares shorted at present.
