almost no-one pays on melb.trams

I don't go to Melbourne very often & when I do I generally drive down so I havn't used the public transport system, since living there some 35 years ago.

Recently I had occasion to use trams several times over a weekend in Melbourne & it was my observation that almost everybody did not pay a fare. They simply got on, sat down & eventually got off. The only exception to this seemed to be middle aged Australians, who were very much in a minority.

Is this ERGs ticketing system in action?

Not blaming the system as such.
It gets down to the attitude/dishonesty of the commuters.

But the end result is it doesnt work,& I wonder about the long term viability of such a ticketing system.

Interested in what others think.
