You can definitely reduce risk by taking a clip and I must admit I've given a lot of thought to the mathematics of generating a lot of trades for a 'wage' or finding a few decent runners. In the end I do a bit of both. You can constantly trade a good runner the only risk being that you might miss a crazy move up. Or one down for that matter. ADT springs to mind as a current case in point. These are the risks of holding runners. I bought BLT at 25.6 average watched it go to 33 then sold it for what I paid for it. I thought given the MC's on PAB, IVX etc it might multi bag but the Yanks had other ideas. It cost me profit but if it had of opened at 50 the next day and I'd already sold I would've been even more disappointed. It gets down to the individual and the system you settle on. It's an interesting argument for sure with trader psychology etc
