I disagree. Using hydrocarbons to produce H2 still has the issue of C and O waste issues ie Co2 and 2CO pollutants. Cost wise, using the refined hydrocarbon for energy production is far cheaper than utilising its components. The technology you suggest will only get traction if governments legislate to its benefit. ie taxing pollutants.
I agree Li is the best mobile storage by far due to its molecular weight and will never be surpassed, its only down side currently 1000 cycles max. V is by far the best long term battery storage but very heavy in its application.
