Be careful with that... I don't mean to sound trite but a short term trade gone bad can easily become a long term investment. In any case, good luck to you. What you say about RIO though is exactly right and that is precisely why if you are a long term investor drawing an annuity from your investments, RIO is a scary place to be.
Have a look at RIO's performance for the 20 year period prior to 2008. It was solid as a rock with strong steady growth in share price. Just after the GFC however, when massive "super profits" became the norm, management became greedy and terribly silly and the company's share price reflected that by swinging wildly like a small cap:
Share price 1988: $4
Share price 2007: $74
Share price August 2007: $74
Share price August 2018: $74
Finally, ask yourself this question: Is your house worth more today than in 2007?
