JB Straubel (co founder of Tesla) has just stated that battery cell production costs are on track to hit the magic mark of 100/kWh by the end of the year. . . so let's put the pieces of the demand puzzle together.
First goal of major car production ticked off (5000/week.) Panasonic are adding a stack of new lines for battery cell production & claim that they'll go from 20GWh - 35GWh by the end of the year. They can't ramp up the model 3 fast enough to absorb that extra production so it'll all be going to one place. Storage.
So Powerwall is totally cell starved, the cell cost is coming down to that magical figure & in the last few days Tesla have talked storage, storage storage & how quickly the storage business will surpass the car business. The ramp up for cars might have taken a while but it's infinitely easier to sell a white box than a bloody car. We're about to see the breakthrough for battery storage. Home & Grid scale. This next worldwide move to battery storage will soak up every ounce of Lithium supply there is.
