I dont think that you need worry too much ( unless you are abusing the SMSF intent )
I am now retired, so I am self funded from my SMSF. The ATO is not interested in me and my wife. They are MORE interested in some of the "shonky" set ups that are not there for provision for retirement. To some extent I agree with any "crackdown" on those who use a system for purely selfish reasons and not that, for which it was intended.
I must say in defence of the $200K figure. The Costs of running ones own SMSF is/can be quite daunting for those who simply think that they can set up a SMSF with ease. $200K whist not a minimum is a good place to begin for a SMSF to be cost effective with average industry return.
