I'm sorry to rain on everyone's parade but yabbies are not for eating.
When we were little we used to trawl along back beach at South West Rocks with a yabbie gun to suck yabbies out of the sand.
The gun was a length of pipe with a side handle that when drawn back acted as a vacuum.
The pipe was driven into the sand and once the yabbies came to the surface we grabbed them quickly so as not to get clamped in their claws and threw them into a bucket.
We used them as bait to catch flathead and whiting.
Eating them? Yuk!
That's before restaurants tried to find new seafoods to interest their patrons who had never ventured outide Sydney.
