Is that any less of a market manipulation than the short sellers? I know lots of people grumble about the speculators, but they are providing liquidity to the buyers. If you want to beat the short sellers, the companies you buy shares in have to deliver results. If they do, the short sellers get caught in a "squeeze" with technically an unlimited downside. If, as they should, the management own shares in the company, or part of their compensation is related to the share price, then surely that provides an added incentive to perform?
Before you ask, no I am not a short seller, but I can see its value to shrewd long term investors.
