RSI is a leading indicator, MACD is more of a lagging indicator but can be used as a leading indicator in the way of bullish divergences with histograms and things like that.
RSI is a measure of a stock against itself and gives the trader a LEADING signal in regards to the potential of a short term trend change.
And no they are not all rubbish. Those 3 key indicators have withstood the test of time. However I don't use the stochastic.
