However, I am concerned about the implications of being "broker sponsored" which I would imagine just about everyone who buys and sells share online is - even investors who place phone orders through brokers are most likely "broker sponsored."

While the broker is not allowed to touch your shares, there look to me to be possible issues should your broker collapse, such as not being able to sell your shares through another broker.
