The $1B is a provision, not a loss. New CEO's like to write down earnings when they start, Mike's got a good excuse now. If Centro et al pay their debts in full (which is quite possible), the provision will be written back to earnings and Mike's profit will look great.
This time last year Mike Smith was at HSBC, bit early to be changing CEO's.
