We need the Libs and another Cambodian solution just like what they had for boat people. Radioactive waste is like boat people in some way
No country wants them even though countries take them due to international and humanitarian reasons. Bringing Lynas operation back to Australia is like asking Australia to take the equivalent of 100000 refugees in a single year as one big hit. The environmental activists, the Greens, a local community where the new plant would be located, ... will be up in arms. There isn't money for this kind of operation.
I think the Malaysians have a point. There was a proposal for a permanent storages of radioactive waste and that was shelved (surely due to cost). They want that to progress. This is the hard bit as experts cannot agree how to permanently dispose of the waste. The cleanest way is to launch it into space and send it into the Sun to join the family of natural radioactivity. Unfortunately, this costs too much!
