Excellent thread. Excellent thinking from everyone. And now, here's some poorer thinking: Marx's maxim "to each according to their needs, and from each according to their abilities" I believe IS achievable if the govn't is endowed with the requisite will and know-how. One tool at its disposal is, of course taxes. Taxes, along with IR regulations can become a great deal more surgical, more focussed on the need to bring about the realisation of that maxim.
It's enemies, of course, are those who have amassed great wealth -and therefore great power and influence- and who would never allow that wealth and power to diminish in the slightest. They will continue to support those philosophies and activities that brought about their fortunes and fight to their last breath anyone or anything that inhibits those activities.
To me, "free market" means nothing more than the freedom to be a criminal. Let the gangland wars go on because the thugs are killing each other: only problem is, that they're killing each other AND killing the innocent as well. You've got to have police and justice. The role of the Fed. Res. and all other Fed.Res.s in the world was supposed to be just that: Cops and Courts.
Alas, the thugs have beaten the cops, with the help of the courts!
