Imo a good reply. Imo, within the maxim, economic gain is only a small aspect of 'needs', of which there are a plethora of others, some of which you have included. In the final analysis it is surely just a matter of one's value system, and whether others are the 'ends' in that value system or whether they are only the 'means' to attaining the ends. Capitalism was always, but continues to slide at an alarming rate further down the slippery slope into being a system of using others to attain one's ends, and those ends are close enough to exclusively economic. The Iraq saga is the current classic example of the use of others to achieve a capitalistic end ... We could start with the armaments manufacturers, the service providers of which there are as many private as there are military personnel and continue on into the petroleum multinationals etc etc. And somewhere in here are the thugs, cops and courts (and I would add the politicians) but to my eyes there seems to be no differentiation between any of them.

And as for the maxim, history has definitely relegated it to the too hard basket ... might I say because there are few who could administer it, and fewer still who would wish to live in it.

Such an mentally stimulating morning ... thanks
    marz
