It would be very likely the guy was charged with GBH the definition of GBH is that the victim suffers life threatening or permament disabling injuries.

However the in a situation like this the police will often charge someone with a lower level charge initialy as it is easier to up grade than down grade charges.

and also not forgeting all reports are stating it was one punch not a sustained beating or the use of a weapon.
