yes there is a difference. look into the brochure from hydro which i posted. at the last pages (from page 10) you can see some sapphire crystals and the application it is used for. so they produce 4N and 5N HPA from high purity aluminium. but iam not sure in wich quantity. probably it isnt a large amount. but i cant verify. probably the larger amount is high purity aluminium and not alumina. but i dont know it.
