Great research. You are however confusing gradient of curve with % change.
For example - take a straight line y = x, so gradient is 1. Going from x =1 to x =2, change is from y =1 to y = 2, i.e. 100%, going from x = 2 to x = 3, change is 50%. Etc etc. notice though that the gradient has stayed the same, as gradient is the amount moved up divided by amount moved across or in the case of a time series, the difference in number of cars sold that year with prior year. % change, as you have correctly calculated, is the amount moved up (yoy difference in cars sold) divided by the amount of cars sold in previous year.
To illustrate better, I've put your numbers in and mocked up a forecast to 2030 to demonstrate how increasing gradient does not actually have to mean increasing % change. The graph looks sigmoidal. I have set the change in cars sold each year to increase by 400k (gradient increase by 400k) up till 2025, then decrease this gradient by 400k every year thereafter. Arbitrary numbers purely to get the sigmoidal shape.
