While I have little first hand knowledge of either the company and the project I do know someone who was quite well across it. From what he has told me the primary reason for the failure was due to down hole issues rather than anything topside. Essentially the project required heat exchange from the hot rocks to surface exchange equipment however the circulation was troublesome due to down hole fouling. 

It's somewhat similar in oil and gas, management rely on a bunch of engineers and field specialists to give them the right info that increases the chance of success. Get the right advice and you have a good shot at success but no gaurentee. Good management get the right advice, funding, teams etc but they don't control whats km's below the earth or how it behaves. 

Geoff is not here to be an engineer or industrial chemist. He's here to support the rest of the team to pave the way for their success by ensuring the right deals, the right funding, the right connections, the right exposure and the right team. Looking back at his time in GDY he achieved these things however was fighting an uphill battle with downhole conditions that simply didn't stack up. 

Hazer have already gone a long way to prove that this process will stack up with existing validation from MIN and the concept engineering study around the corner to add further weight to an already appealing process.
