Also remember you cant make steel from renewables , gas , or nuclear , must have carbon in the mix I believe. No steel , no solar panels , no wind turbine towers , no steel reinforcement in concrete for cooling towers or hydro concrete dam walls.   Coal will always be essential, maybe not for power, but for the steel  manufacturing industry of almost everything in this age we live , in even electric cars and their batteries will need steel. Cant see a replacement for steel on the foreseeable horizon so I imagine coal being with us for a long time to come.
