If we had lived in the middle ages, we may all have been merchants - waiting for a caravan from China or a ship from the East Indies. The anxiety would have been greater than simply waiting for a permit to drill, but I guess the personal rewards would have been greater too.

An interesting point about that refers to a merchant in Hamburg who was waiting for a shipment of pepper. So great was the demand that people were prepared to pay in advance for pepper the merchant did not yet have. The trustworthy burgers arrested him, but he was acquitted - hence started the practice of shorting, or selling something which you do not own but are prepared to acquire in the future..
