I can tell you now that the environmental report is not misleading and that the long-term value of the islands non-phosphate natural resources (i.e. the crabs, birds etc) are potentially worth far more than the low grade phosphate that remains. they are also renewable.

The industry has had many many years to gear themselves for the inevitable shutdown of the mine, but they have not spent their profits retraining islanders into new industries more sympathetic with the location.

If you have ever been there, you will also know that there is a potential minefield of health claims in the future from the dust that covers the settlement.

Still, check your facts....the place is alittle green gem in the Indian Ocean, phosphate mining is incompatable with the natural history values. Look at Nauru - short term financial gain has left the island dependent upon aid, has left the island without vegetation cover and has changed its rainfall patterns!
