The claim numbers show that it was just a bunch of the Terre Des Montagne claims that would have deemed to be less prospective and not worth renewal fees. All the 'core' ones are numbered 243xxxx to 244xxxx, the ones let go were 245xxxx range.
Considering the tiny blue block is one of the largest hard rock deposits in the world, it's not hard to see why they trimmed the edges around the prospective zones in the green blocks.
