Hitachi to supply lithium-ion batteries for GM hybrid vehicles

TOKYO — Hitachi Ltd said Wednesday it has received exclusive orders for lithium-ion batteries from General Motors Corp for use in its gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles. Starting from 2010, the leading U.S. automaker plans to put on the North American market annually more than 100,000 hybrids mounted with the Hitachi batteries.
The batteries will be produced by Hitachi Vehicle Energy Ltd, jontly set up in 2004 by Hitachi, Hitachi Maxell Ltd and Shin-Kobe Electric Machinery Co. Lithium-ion batteries can store more electricity than nickel-hydrogen batteries, which are adopted by Toyota Motor Corp, the leader in the global hybrid vehicle market.
