The Coalition's standing with voters is now so dire that many MPs and some party officials estimate at least 20 seats could be lost. Others fear it could be up to 30, consigning the government to a rump of about 45 places in the 151-seat House of Representatives.
Several even believe the best result would be a once-in-a-generation wipeout that claims so many victims that a cleanskin leader is given the chance to rebuild a fractured Liberal Party from opposition.
