Yes, this one has me flummoxed, too.

A collection of ostensibly highly credible backers/managers involved in something that is definitively conceptual.

My approach to this unique situation was to be very vigilant in relation to Revenue milestones, which I deemed them to have breached when they announced they were reducing the cost base in order to extend the cash runway.

But I keep watching it, because - as you imply - what is unlikely to happen to it is to merely wither on the vine after two years and blow away on the evening breeze.

But what I can't foresee is the point at which the directors will collectively conclude,

"Nah, ladies and gentlemen, it's not gunnah work. We gave it a shot, but we're going to be caught short. So best thing for us to do is to pull up stumps while there are still some decent capital reserves, and to hand the remaining dough back to the owners of the business. And then we'll all ride off into the sunset."

Because that's simply not how directors of publicly-listed companies are wired, in my experience.
