There’s a much, much stupider problem here. On the one hand we have the Australian government condemning China because Huawei has been snooping on encrypted communications passed through their devices. On the other hand, we have the Australian government passing legislation giving it the power to demand that any software company providing encrypted communications in Australia provide the government with a secret (on pain of imprisonment) back door allowing them to read any encrypted message they like. No way that could ever backfire in spectacularly disastrous ways, right?
