what is many fold? Take the Chevy Volt - its battery will get you around 100km on a charge and capacity is 16kWH (though only half is used. So you have 8 kWh which if you charged overnight would be a bit like running a hairdryer. If most people did this overnight you would need ZERO additional power generation capacity as the grid is heavily under-utilized at night.

There are many - electricity, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), biofuels, even liquified coal. People are developing all sorts of alternatives for oil. Using less of it through efficiency and changing the way we consume it is another perfectly valid one.
