I can agree with both points to some degree , based on the original implementation of the tax system the tax you paid provided you with an age pension , but we are living longer , generally more opportunity and financial literacy is quite common .
Potentially scary is the pending Shorten victory , removal of gearing and franking credits , purely because firstly the cash base , secondly if they have you on a pension they have control . Much prefer being self sufficient personally , it needs to be viewed as a backstop rather than a right .
