It is possible that it is not that murky and the offtake agreement reflects the murky world of paper gold. If the giant squid and others have been selling gold they don't really have then they need to get their hands on physical at some point. If the agreement is to supply at spot then it doesn't cost then anything and if things get tight in the paper world it is good insurance to have a supply tied up.
