just to put dans question into perspective, the accounting equation is
A+E = P+L+R
at year end, the R and the E accounts are closed of, and the balance transferred to the P account, which is proprietorship, or the shareholders equity, such that the balance sheet is
A = P+L
shareholders equity is the debt owing to the shareholders. watso would suggest, that dan2001, is not incorrect
