Labor don't really want or care about self funded retirees. They want govt dependence. This allows them to justify and tax the wealthier people to make up the gap and smooth out the redistribution of wealth. Its a grand plan to robin hood society, to drive it toward conformity. They over spent, blew the budget up and now say they need to tax people to make a surplus. Saw that coming when they were in last time. Here it is in their policy mix.
The issue is that people like shorten will become rich living off tax payers as the Labor leadership always has. Name one of them that isn't a multi millionaire. Shorten and Rudd are worth tens of millions via their wives and will make millions in entitlements from us. Meanwhile, those hypocrites go on about Turnbull. Its the real long term damage they will do that is the problem. I wouldn't mind if they made money, but they are incompetent and probably corrupted thinkers. It will also help enrich unions. Govt departments are unionized and so are a lot of their super funds. Anything Labor do, will be mainly for that purpose. Socialists dont like wealth or business that generates it even though that is who pays their salaries one way or the other. Can't fix stupid or short sighted regressives dressed up as progressives.
Not all people in Labor are this stupid, but parties do tend to attract like minded people on things like tax.
