much of that is my points I have been arguing for decades -
media portrays the crime against aged as people hiding behind building ready to spring out and do physical harm to oldies and take their handbag
does it happen? - rarely
what has been happening hundreds of times every day is assault inside nursing homes and private homes -
barely rated a mention.
ditto now - the family domestic violence - we see women bashed etc - but, what don't we see -
example - I have a mate at present who had a house (still owns it) next to a couple - this is what he saw -
he saw a quiet man who spent his time in the garden, poking around happily - didn't talk much, didn't seem overly friendly -
but, when the wife came home all he heard was her barking orders and demands at the man - ordering this, yelling for that
one day my mate was washing his car in the driveway and he had the music playing -- he felt something was happening behind him - so, he turned around to find about 4 police cars pulled up - --
he though 'bugger, I bet the old guy hasn't liked the music and has called the cops' -
no - what had happened was the old guy had shot the wife - called the police, then shot himself - both dead.
What does history write - that this was family violence and a man killed his wife - he was the perpetrator -
but, my mate said - he could only go on what he knew and what he knew was that most days - the old guy was abused as soon as the wife walked in the door -
so, who can say what is what? Was he a bad evil doer of physical damage? Was she just another controlling, abusive emotional horror?????
We see a lot about one of those in our society - we see diddly squat about the other.
As to what iwonder says -- yes, I see those symptoms as well --------- I don't say all is perfect - far from it - but, what I rail against is that most of our 'conservative' views have given us what we have today - it's the cutting down of systems and the cutting down of research into the real causes of our problems that have hindered rather than helped.
One would think after something like Port Arthur that our mental health services would be better --------- are they?
Nope - they appear to be just as bad, if not worse.
What do people bitch about? - do they bitch about lack of mental health services and do they call for politicians to put more into the system???? ----------------- nope, they call for cutting costs and paying less tax -
then, they bitch because there are too many mental cases on the street
der?????????????
basically - I think they are idiots
I sat among a group (which I like) a couple of months back - the conversation was about how to treat prisoners -
my take was that you look around the world to find who has the lowest recidivism rates - and, just do what they do -
how easy is that? - just copy what works --
but, no - everyone just wanted to make life uncomfortable for prisoners - take away their comfort. Dehumanize them. Punish them hard.
the very thing that is proved that gives you the worst results
go figure????????? in the light of strong evidence ----------- go and do the worst bloody thing
I give up ----------- they live with what they have fought for
