Generally speaking, short sellers comprise a mix of sophisticated investors, day traders, hedge funds and even investment bank brokers trading for their own accounts. All ply their trade through the automated algorithmic trading programs run by the investment bank brokers. These programs automatically make decisions to buy and sell based on coded instructions. Such computer-generated trades are designed to achieve specific trading strategies.
Unfortunately, extensive research data reveals that these programs are highly manipulative, as the trades they generate consistently show conflicts with the laws that govern trading. Moreover, adding to the problems for ordinary “mum and dad” investors is that the regulator has strenuously avoided addressing the conflicts raised by chronic trading irregularities.
