redgreek:" I have family living in Greece, who ALL complain about the increased crime, drugs etc..."

Not surprised, redgreek, such sentiments are usually family-wide!
Guess what? I have a number of families in Greece who feel quite the opposite!

You want to establish a "moral bureaucracy" that will do the job that the Greek church used to perform prior to '80-1. That is, every document one needed would have to have the signature of the village priest; no land permits, no building permits, no passports, no weddings, no funerals, no entering into your first house without first the priest coming to "bless" it and sign a document to that effect, nothing could be done without the approval of the village priest who would be needed to back up his signature with comments like, "a good christian," or "has attended church regularly," or, the opposite: "I cannot grand permission because because the applicant is not a very good christian."

The Peloponnese was a regular hell for getting to do anything.

    Crime and drugs my foot!

Migrants (strangers, foreigners) are always the whipping boy for anything that goes wrong in the society. It's so easy to say... "He did it!"
The number of cases that are still emerging in the US where a black man would be picked up by the police as a suspect of a crime AND convicted, simply because he happened to be there should be an indication of this phenomenon.

And as for the Greeks, their ancient history and literature tells them that the father of all the gods, Zeus (the word "theos" derived from that) was the protector of the stranger. Read some Homer, red greek!
