DJ MARKET TALK: Challenger Financial Upgraded To Buy By Merrill
2301 GMT [Dow Jones] STOCK CALL: Merrill Lynch upgrades Challenger Financial (CGF.AU) to Buy with A$3.50 price target, which analyst says implies 77% 12 month total shareholder return. "While a further widening in credit spreads over 2H08 and illiquidity in RMBS markets pose near-term earnings headwinds, we believe CGF's 67% price fall since September has been overdone," analyst says. Reckons there is value upside of at least 40% even under a run-off or breakup scenario. Also says group has surplus capital of up to A$500 million supporting acquisitions or a share buyback, and says outlook improving, with credit markets conditions easing. CGF last at A$2.08. (LMF)
