Lubumbashi: police seize 35,000 tons of copper and cobalt




The Lubumbashi Mines and Hydrocarbons Police say it seized on Tuesday more than 35,000 tons of copper and cobalt ores found in a warehouse located about twenty kilometers from Lubumbashi on the Lubumbashi-Likasi axis. The judicial police officer who investigates the case suspects a group of Chinese nationals of stealing these minerals in the Lusuishi mine, located on the same axis.It reveals that more than 850 large 35-tonne trucks transported these ores each night to drop them in this old factory abandoned.According to the same officer, these minerals come from two quarries on the Lubumbashi-Likasi road in Kawama village in the Lusuishi and Lukuni quarries owned by Congo Dong Fang Mining (CDM).The prosecutor general of Haut-Katanga ordered the requisition of this product after a complaint filed by the mining company on the theft of these minerals by Chinese operators in complicity with some Congolese merchants, says the police.A team composed of the Mines Police, the agents of CDM as well as the Public Prosecutor went on the spot. A young man who was guarding the warehouse said the warehouse would belong to a group of Chinese nationals who would have cleared the place before the police arrived.This young man in his twenties was brought before the public prosecutor's office while waiting to find the owners of the warehouse.
