If the directors thought that by all buying shares on the open market was going to change sentiment and provide a boost to SP it would be just another example of either naivety or stupidity. If you were a conspiracist you might even think that they thought that it would fool the market into thinking that there was something about to happen. Either way it was not enough to show any form of conviction and therefore a complete waste of time.
