Most of that has been answered.
The first batch of Pearls will be deployed around the equator (so will all the others). With 16 Sats it will create 40% of a ring around the Earth, so it won't be able to provide an uninterrupted service and hence it will not be used for phone calls. As each orbit will take about 90 mins; the area under the Sats orbit will have around 36 mins of service followed by 54 mins of no service and then repeat. (These are only rough figures so no one bite my head of if I'm a little bit off). The first batch will be used for carry to forward applications like IOT, messaging, financial transactions, tracking.
SAS claim they have deals in place with Sat Space Africa, Beeptool and GlobalSat to use the first batch (valued at US$21-46M per annum apparently).
