NBD - sorry for butting in:  I think women know straight away if there is 'chemical' compatibility - men are the dumb ones IMO - but of course in societies where marriages are arranged and women have no say - you probably get misalliances.
The Germans have a colloquialism which says: 'den kann ich nicht riechen'
literal meaning:  I can't bear the smell of that person,
but when used nowadays means simply: 'I can't stand that person' -
of course the original meaning is lost on most people, but IMO it comes from the days when smell was a strong factor on account of poorer hygiene and inability to block body odours chemically as we can do nowadays.
