Tesla's debt to equity ratio at Dec 2018 was 2.43. It is not the highest it's been in the compamy's history and compared to the other listed automakers only Ford and GM have higher debt to equity ratios at the moment.

I can't say that Tesla will or won't fail but in December 2008, President Bush agreed to a $24.9 billion bailout using TARP: $13.4 billion for GM, $5.5 billion for Chrysler, and $5 billion for GMAC. Failure of automakers
is possible and has happened before. In fact GM's bankruptcy was the fourth largest in US corporate history and occurred last time markets topped. Will history repeat? I don't know, but there are more defensive stocks out there for people concerned about falling US GDP growth and overvalued markets. Esh
