I think that the point of Snowy 2.0 is about covering future longer term loss of coal fired generation which is likely to be replaced by intermittent sources which require firming.
It probably wouldn't be economic if coal fired generation remains on line in the longer term.
In the short term something else is needed to cover a few hours a day for a few weeks of the year in SA and Vic.
SA likely to have some small pumped hydro schemes and a new gas fired generator using the temporary diesel burning jet engine ones.
Victoria might be demand response.
