"The ATSB have shown pretty conclusively that the plane ran out of fuel during flight and crashed from a substantial height. "
News to me Jason. If the plane ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean from a substantial height then the flaperons or the wing flaps would not have been extended, and the condition of both indicate they were extended. All the evidence points to a controlled water ditching. That also can explain why it wasn't in the search area, as it was based on a band approx 40nm wide. If it did run out of fuel before being ditched then it could have glided approx 120nm in any direction. My personal belief is it didn't run out of fuel, as the captain would have wanted all the control he could get including power on ditching to keep the speed to a minimum. I'll give you your wave theory as problematic as the wreckage has been from the right side of the plane. I hope they find this thing as it must be hell for the families to not have closure.
