what you say about Turnbull is correct but you fail to acknowledge Abbott himself blew most of his electoral advantage through breaking big promises in his first 3 months of office. He could have promised tough medicine before the election, still won in a canter AND had a mandate for tough reforms. But Abbott took the shortcut, which was his undoing. Turnbull may have scraped in last election but Abbott would have led them to a crushing defeat, perhaps even as big as the one we will see this time. Abbott and Turnbull have both been toxic for the party, a bit like Howard/Peacock in the 1980s.
