Talk to the locals. I was out in broken hill 18 months ago and had an accidental 3 hour chat with a publican about the pipeline for the town. I learn more in that discussion than I ever could have read anywhere. There was no agro, no ego, just plains facts from a local. I let him talk uninterupted about the pro's and con's from end to end.
