Medicine dangers 'held in secrecy' Serious adverse reactions to medicines including deaths, heart failure and pancreatitis are being hidden from Australian doctors and patients and a new study says it is "unacceptable."In the decade between 2007 and 23016 doctors in Canada the US and the UK received 207 warnings letters about medicine serious side affects including possible death.
However, when Sydney University researchers investigated whether Australians had been informed it found our medicines watchdog the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) did not post these letters on its website.
The TGA told them to approach the pharmaceutical companies who manufactured the medicines says Dr Barbara Mintzes.
When they did so they found only four companies were willing to provide proof they had sent out the letters it Australia.
Some companies claimed the letters were commercial in confidence.
"The idea that a warning letter that has gone out and would be confidential is counter intuitive ( Professor Barbara Mintzes).

Almost 50 people a day die from medical malpractice in Australia A41 - but this hardly gets a mention nor is anyone held accountable as far as I know. But come down with the measles and every one is in lockdown.
Just imagine if 50 people died every day from the measles?
In Australia, by some estimates, as many as 18,000 people die every year as a result of medical error.
About 50,000 suffer a permanent injury.
