As much as I'd love to discuss philosophical issues with you, I'd think we'd better stay in the real world thanks comrade.

As one that does a bit of research, I thought you'd be better informed. Public transport in Melbourne only moves about 20% of commuters. So, as sensible as it would seem to move them by public transport, we would have to rebuild the city in order to make it work. In other words , it's just not possible.

Given what we have to work with I think an electric fleet, particularly for cities, is a no brainer. The only thing I would change is encouraging ( heavily wink.png ) ride sharing for commuters. One of biggest problems is congestion and that's because we have thousands of people in cars by themselves all going to the same destination at the same time. Providing an incentive for people to ride share would reduce congestion thus reducing pollution even without using evs.

When I talk about the average, it is all about the numbers. You seem to have a problem with that rather than understanding the issue. To reduce pollution from the Australian vehicle fleet it is obvious to go for the largest part of the group that is also the easiest one to reduce. And that group is the commuting group. Millions of people travelling short distances sitting in traffic jams every day. I'd call that low hanging fruit.

As for those that aren't the average, and that includes myself, we will be the beneficieries of the technology anyway. That's why I made the comments I did about my next car. Using the Rivian as an example, that would almost do the job for me now. 600k range full size ute with all the fruit. Given the improvements in battery tech over the next 5 years I expect that vehicle to have a range of 1000ks. I have just completed a short holiday of a few thousands ks that included some quite remote outback in SA. While I could've managed it with a 600k range ( my ute will do about 700 ), a 1000k range ute would do it easy.

Unless circumstances change dramatically, I'll be replacing my diesel 4wd ute with an electric AWD one in 5 years time.

    Lock it in Eddie.
